Exodus 19:5
"Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of Nations you will be my treasured possession, Although the whole earth is mine."
Now just think about that all we have to do it keep HIS covenant that HE has given us and has given us the ability to keep...He will treasure us more than anything even though the WHOLE earth is His! Isn't that amazing! I am going to start with this, I like to think of a covenant as more of a promise...so say that your best friend just entrusted you with a promise that they have total faith in you that you will keep it, I would like to think that if we would keep our secrets like the men and women in the bible kept they're covenants friendships would be ALOT different! Well covenants are kinda like that when you make a covenant with God you promising Him that you won't do something or that you will do something.
I was looking up the word covenant in the dictionary and heres what I came up with:
Covenant: an agreement, usually formal, between two or more persons to do or not to do something
:the biblical word for a conditional promise made to humanity by God
Now that we have established what a covenant is...I kinda wanna explain it more...a covenant is a promise NOT meant to be broken.
Lets talk about how covenants have a big thing to do with relationships my friend have some really good things to say about that.
"In Hebrew the word "hesed' means loving-kindness more accurately faithfullness/covenant, loyalty/keeping or covenant= partnership
Righteousness= Capacity to keep a covenant (relationship)
Do we have this capacity??? NOOO!
God keeps BOTH sides of the covenant! He keeps His end and enables us to keep our end-rather He keeps it for us!!
Walk with God and then find obedience possible!
It was always about faith and relationship, The Law was an extension of that, There was always one covenant
We often think of it as the period of Law/sacrifice/etc. then Jesus came and made it about relationship, NO! it was always about relationship"
I really like how Jeremiah 31:31-33 puts it
"The time is coming" declares the Lord, "when i will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, It will not be like the covenant
I made with their forefathers when i took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant. Though I was a husband to them"
Declares the Lord
"This is a covenant I will make to the house of Israel after that time," declares the Lord "I will put my Law in their minds and write in on their hearts
I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Jeremiah 31:31-33
To establish a covenant with God means to start a relationship built on that one covenant!!!!!

Good thoughts. You're right, a covenant is a very solemn thing indeed. I studied it some last semester, I may dig up my notes and get back to you. :) It was pretty awesome stuff.
